Sofia Pessoa Jorge is a Portuguese artist from Torres Vedras, Portugal, whose practice is primarily rooted in painting and drawing, working predominantly with oil and acrylic. Her work explores the relationship between landscape and the human figure, considering the ways in which they coexist, influence one another, and become intertwined.
Landscape occupies a central place in her practice, emerging both from direct observation — through in situ studies — and from memory and the reconstruction of places. Rather than approaching landscape solely as a representation of space, she is interested in it as a territory of experience, memory, and imagination. Within it, the human figure is not treated as an isolated subject, but as an intrinsic part of an environment with which it remains in constant dialogue.
In recent years, she has been expanding the scale of her supports while further exploring the narrative possibilities of painting. Her process moves between observation and imagination, using everyday images and encounters as starting points.
At the age of 18, she moved to Lisbon to study Medicine, a path she left three years later in order to dedicate herself to painting. She subsequently attended two one-year continuing education courses at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, as well as the Atelier Livre de Pintura in Árvore.
Between 2018 and 2022, she studied Drawing at ArCo – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon. In 2021, she attended an intensive Portrait course at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, where she further developed her observational drawing through the sight-size method and studied life-size painting within the tradition of academic and atelier-based practice.
